Dr. K J Vargheese, Associate Professor in Christ College, Irinjalakkuda was the resource person who delivered a talk on “ICT in English Education” at Teacher Development Programme organised by Higher Secondary Directorate, Kerala on Jan 4, 2012 for Higher Secondary Teachers of Thrissur District.

Some highlights in the contribution of ICT in teaching and learning of English language and the ways the technology can assist in English course planning was presented by Dr. Vagheese in his speech. The talk was more like a discussion on technology related to teaching English language skills. For example, topics such as use of technology in student’s vocabulary development; technology associated with language learning in educational institutions; computer-assisted purposeful learning environments in addition to content-specific applications of technology in English language skills like Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The use of ICT in English classroom extends beyond its motivational value to address key outcomes of the syllabus, and allows students to become competent users as well as consumers in English. Dr. Varghese states ICT as an interactive and collaborative medium that allows responding, composing, and publication to be easily shared and offers students the opportunity to explore the language more creatively and develop as speakers, writers and readers for an ever widening range of purposes and audiences.

The session winded up with the umpteen benefits of ICT including professional development of teachers through various programs, availability of English language learning materials on internet, e-books, e-journals, e-magazines and social sites, curriculum framing and much more.
