Invited talk on Teaching Writing Skills through Email Exchange Programme

Dr. K J Varghese, English Professor from Christ College, Irinjalakuda was invited to talk on “Teaching Writing Skills through Email Exchange programme” at the 20th international NELTA conference conducted in Nepal.
The talk emphasised mainly on the effective applications of e-mail or electronic mailing system in teaching writing skills. Email is a programme that uses communication tools and computer text–processing to provide a high-speed information exchange service which can create great impact on teaching reading and writing skills of ESL learners. The comfort and ease of editing, duplicating, and delivering information and messages make email a good tool to learn writing without spending much time in classrooms.
Dr. Varghese vividly expressed his ideas on the umpteen benefits of E-mail in foreign language learning. The first point was the extended language learning time one get while communicating with others using e-mails. Email provides context for real-life communication and genuine interactions by connecting foreign language speakers outside the classroom. In addition, the talk gave an idea about the effectiveness and flexibility of email in facilitating second language writing more effective. E-mail can be used as a very useful and powerful vehicle for teaching. It helps the teacher to monitor the course of the students' writings to save class period for the teacher's assignments and comments.
The 20th International NELTA Conference, organized by the Nepal English Language Teachers Association (NELTA) took place from 17th February to the 19th February 2015 in DAV Sushil Kedia Vishwa Bharati Higher Secondary School, Jawalakhel, Lalitpur Lalitpur, Nepal.
