Invited Talk on ELT Methods and Approaches

A talk on ‘ELT-Methods and Approaches’ was conducted by Dr. K J Varghese at Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha for the postgraduate students of nearby colleges in March 2015.

Dr Varghese, the Assistant Professor of Christ College, Irinjalakkuda, Thrissur is the visiting faculty of Regional Institute of English, Bangalore and State Institute of English, Thrissur. He also serves as the advisor and consultant of digital language lab.

The talk of ELT methods and approaches conducted by Dr Varghese focused mainly on teaching practices in general, other considerations involved and the applicability of theories and in language pedagogical settings. The various teaching methods such as direct method, grammar translation, audio-lingual, task-based language learning, principled eclecticism etc along with its effective practising in language sessions were explained in the talk. From his academic research and long teaching experience, he said that there isn’t a single best method for everyone in all contexts, and that no one teaching method is essentially superior to the others. He explained that it is not always possible to apply the same teaching methodology and approach to all learners, who have different acquisition levels, environments and learning needs.

According to him, an experienced professional English language teacher always addresses the issue of learners' needs and styles first, before deciding on the most suitable techniques. Then only the teacher will think of applying the appropriate methodology considering learner’s specific objectives, learning style and context.
